Course Description and Classroom Expectations

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The ninth grade English course is designed to create an awareness of words and help students develop skills which will help them to improve their vocabulary.  It offers an integrated writing and grammar assessment which will help improve student’s writing.  Special emphasis will be placed on the step by step instruction to help students achieve the level of writing necessary in today’s world.  In addition, the course attempts to create an appreciation for classical, traditional, and modern literature through short stories, drama, poetry, prose, and novels.  Classroom discussion will help students gain knowledge from each other and learn to respect other points of view.

MATERIALS:

  • 2 three prong folders- with or without pockets.  Just for this class!
  • Lose leaf paper
  • Pens/pencils
  • Colored pencils

Optional but helpful: dictionary of thesaurus.  Classroom copies will be available, but may not always be available for your student’s use.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  • RESPECT! Respect your fellow classmates. Do not speak when someone else is speaking.  WE can all learn from each other, but only if we have a positive environment in which we feel free to share ideas and thoughts.
  • If you have a question ask.  The only dumb question is the unasked one.
  • Be prepared for class when the bell rings.
  • Please attend to personal needs before class begins. If you must leave, please fill out your passbook AND fill out the sign out sheet in my classroom before asking for my signature.

LATE/MISSING WORK:

Late work will not be accepted, unless it was due to an excused absence.  In that case, any missing work must be turned in the day of the student’s returned.

ABSENCES:

There are times when missing class is unavoidable.  Remember that you are responsible for getting your missing assignments.  If you are turning in an assignment that was given when you were absent, please write AB and the date on the top of your paper along with your name, class section.
GRADING:

Grades will be based on a points system.

  • Tests will generally be worth 100 points.
  • Quizzes/spelling will vary due to number of words/question, usually 50 points.
  • Essays will be graded per the rubrics (students will get copies when assignments are made).
  • In class activities and homework will vary from 10-50 points.
  • Projects will usually be 100 points.
  • BP Points will start at 100.  For each violation of classroom or school rules, 10 points will be deducted.

TEXT:

Scott Foresman Literature and Integrated Series: Forms of Literature
William J. Kerrigan, Allan A. Metcalf Writing to the point

Other texts and supplemental materials will be used as well.  At this point, I have not determined which novel(s) will be taught.  There is also the potential of using movies to help connect students with written work.  Those will be determined along with the novels.

EXTRAS:

Students are encouraged to save any and all work.  Handouts, note, vocabulary sheets, etc. may all be useful study tools to help prepare for semester exam.
